About the Program

Federal Work-Study Student Handbook

Eligibility

Undergraduate students must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours) and be degree-seeking students to be considered for FWS. Many more students are eligible for FWS than can actually be awarded. Therefore, it is very well possible that a student may be awarded FWS one year but not the next even though their financial situation has remained the same. To apply, students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 1 of each year. You will not be considered for a FWS award if you submit your materials after this date. If you have questions about filling out this form, please contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).

All freshmen and transfer students will receive a written letter from the Office of Financial Aid notifying them of their financial aid package around mid to late March. Returning students will receive an email notification around late June to early July. These notifications will state whether a student has received a Federal Work Study award and the award amount.

Benefits of the Program

Earnings in this program are intended to help students defray educational and living expenses while attending Virginia Commonwealth University. Not only does participating in the program help pay for your college education, you will acquire a new set of skills, earn money, and learn how to manage your time wisely. Studies indicate that students who have college work experience gain more than money. They find opportunities to meet people, network, and learn to work and communicate effectively with others. They also develop leadership, problem solving, decision-making and time management skills and they even tend to do better academically.

Not sure if you have FWS?

Log into e-Services within the myVCU portal located on the VCU Home Page. Select the Financial Aid tab that appears at the top and click on “Financial Aid Status”. Then click on “Financial Aid History”. This will show if you have been awarded FWS and the amount you have been awarded.

Special Note: Jobs will be posted by July 25th on HireVCURams. Please check back then!
